March is a rather busy month for huge blockbuster movies, and it all starts with Creed III. Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut, which also stars Jonathan Majors and Tessa Thompson, was the buzz of the town prior to its release, and its opening weekend has already been a success.
According to Variety, Creed III, which is essentially an anime movie from beginning to end and is spoken directly by Jordan, has earned $100.4 million as of this writing, making it the Creed franchise’s biggest opening weekend since the series launch in 2015. That’s better than anticipated, which can be attributed to the film’s three leading actors’ star power and positive reviews and word of mouth. Of that total, $41.8 million came from international markets, with the remaining $58.7 million coming from North American markets. Globally, its international ticket sales outperformed both Creed II and the original by 109% and 25%, respectively, in 2018. However, this does not include Japan, which will not get the movie until May 26.
Due to Creed III’s performance, last week’s Cocaine Bear, which had an overall gross of $41.2M and $11.1M domestically from this past weekend, fell to third position. Ant-Man & the Wasp, however, dropped to second place with about $12.5 million, a 60% decline from its strong start in mid-February. It’s now hit nearly $420 million overall, but still has one of the biggest box office drops in the MCU to date.
Scream 6 and 65 will be released on March 10 next week, followed by Shazam: Fury of the Gods on March 17 and John Wick: Chapter 4 on March 24. On March 31, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will release, capping the month. Although Creed might be able to compete with some of them, it won’t be long until one of those films challenges it for the top spot.
